Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture

and consumer protection

As a member of the Federal Government, the Federal Minister is responsible for the direction of German food, agriculture and consumer policy and heads the Federal Ministry. It goes back to the Reich Ministry of Food and Agriculture, which was founded on February 13, 1919.

From 1949 to 2001 the ministry was called the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry, and since 2005 it has been the Federal Ministry of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture. The order was arranged alphabetically to show the equality of the individual departments.

The inclusion of consumer protection instead of forest in the name goes back to Renate Künast.

Due to the changes in society, the Federal Minister now sees himself much more responsible for data protection issues.
