adverbs

An adverb qualifies a verb, participle, adjective, another adverb, or a whole sentence. Adverbs form their own part of speech. In a broader sense, these belong to the particles, which means that they can neither be declined nor conjugated.

Some adverbs can be sharpened, while others are inflexible. All adverbs are part of a sentence without having to be part of a sentence. With over 1,000 members, adverbs in German form a relatively large, open class.

Based on their conventional meaning, adverbs are divided into local adverbs, temporal adverbs, causal adverbs, modal adverbs and interrogative adverbs. In the case of adverbs, the border to other parts of speech is not always easy to determine and also differs in teaching. The reason for this is also that there are a number of adverbs that are derived from derivations. Sometimes adverbs even include discursive particles or modal particles, which can lead to further ambiguity.
