According to the classical definition, a pronoun is a word that can stand for another word, a noun. The German term for "pronoun" is "fürwort".
The pronouns allow the speaker or writer to avoid cumbersome repetition and to clarify different relationships to and between different nouns.
Most pronouns serve as placeholders or substitutes for a noun. Certain pronouns can also be placed before a noun as an article word. Which pronouns are used as substitutes for a noun and which article word can be in front of a noun is indicated with the individual pronouns.
The pronouns are divided into different classes according to their meaning and their function. These are: personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, reflexive pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, relative pronouns, interrogative pronouns and indefinite pronouns.
Pronouns can be inflected. Depending on the class and position of the pronoun, they are inflected like adjectives or like nouns. Some pronouns are invariable. How a pronoun is inflected is indicated for each pronoun individually.
