The Watzmann-Mittelspitze forms the highest point in the Berchtesgadener Land with a height of 2713m.
Its east face is considered the highest face in the Eastern Alps.

The Watzmannagrat connects the middle peak of 2713m, the main summit of the Watzmann, with the southern peak of 2712m and the Hocheck of 2651m
In addition to the three protruding hills of the big Watzmann, the small Watzmann, on the left side from the perspective of Berchtesgaden, also popularly known as the Watzfrau, with a height of 2307m and the Watzmannkinder in between are very well known.

Watzmann Legend
The Watzmann legend describes the fate of a royal family that was turned into stone. The most popular view of the Watzmann is from the north, i.e. from left to right to be more precise. So we can see the Watzmann woman first, then the children and the large main peak is supposed to represent the Watzmann.
According to legend, the country was ruled by a cruel king named Watzmann. He loved neither man nor animal and took great pleasure in torturing and killing them.
He was most enthusiastic about hunting, but not only his wife and 7 children had great fun taking part in hunts and spreading terror throughout the country.
One day, however, the king steered his steed towards an old mother and had her trampled on by him. He lets his dogs maul the family that rushes to help. Then the mother rises up again shortly before death and curses the godless king and his family and may heaven turn them to stone.
Then the earth opens up, spits fire and turns the whole family to stone.

alpinism
It is believed that a Slovene named Valentin Stanic first climbed the Mittelspitze in August 1800. Here sources argue whether the first ascent was not a year earlier, in 1799. After climbing the summit, he also scaled the highest point of the Watzmann. However, the great crossing of the Watzmann was not until 1868 and was carried out by the Ramsau mountain guide Johann Grill, the Kederbacher, and Johann Punz. They were the first to scale the small Watzmann in 1852.
It then took some time until the Watzmann east face was climbed, but 1881 was the time and Johann Grill had the courage.
