Location and Surroundings

The Wendelstein, a mountain in the Bavarian Alps. It measures a height of 1836 meters and is considered to be the most Upper Bavarian mountain par excellence.
This mountain belongs to the eastern part of the Bavarian Pre-Alps, the Mangfall Mountains.
In the Wendelstein massif, the Wendelstein is the highest peak and, due to its excellent location, offers a very beautiful view of the Bavarian foothills of the Alps.
In the opposite case, it can also be seen in a wide area.

The Wendelstein nestles between the two valleys of Leitzach and Inn. It is also accessible with the Wendelstein cog railway and cable car.
The Mangfall rises at its foothills in a northerly direction, but is still called Jenbach there. This then becomes the cold one on its further way.
Over time, an ever-expanding infrastructure has settled on the summit. Especially on the east summit, there are buildings such as the observatory, Geopark, wind turbine, weather station, the Wendelstein Chapel and the transmitter of the Bavarian Radio.

The buildings around the summit and the mountain station are connected by wide and concrete paths.
The summit can be reached through countless serpentines and stairs, which enable every hiker to reach the summit of the Wendelstein

In order to supply the employees of the weather station, the Bavarian radio and the observatory in winter, there is an elevator in the middle of the mountain, with the help of which the cog railway can be used via a tunnel.
Due to this construction, the Wendelstein became more and more popular and with it the Wendelstein Cave with stalactites, in which the ice remains until late summer.

Another sight is the Wendelsteinkicherl, which is still the highest church in Germany. It was built on July 1, 1889 and weddings and masses are still held there in the summer.

ski area

There is a small but also very demanding ski area on the Wendelstein. There are a total of two mountain railways and two tow lifts.
The east descent is accessed by the Lacher lift, which starts at the Wendelsteinalmen.
The descent from the hotel slope leads to the Wendelsteinalmen and steers the skier past the crematorium.
This rock face has long been used by people for tanning and sunbathing, as the rock face is exposed to the blazing sun when the weather is nice.
This was also described with the words "to burn corpses". This is how the rock face found its very macabre name.
