Location and Surroundings
The Schneeberg is 2,076 m above sea level at its highest point. A. and thus the easternmost two-thousanders in the Alps and the highest peak in Lower Austria.
This mountain has several peaks between 1800 and 2076m. It has steep mountain flanks but only on three sides and forms a geological unit with the help of the Rax, the so-called Rax-Schneeberg Group.
The monastery coat of arms to the south-west is connected by a fine ridge and faces the Kaiserstein.
This exceeds the two-thousander mark with a height of 2061m and forms the subsoil for the fisherman`s hut.
One can conclude from the two peaks that the Schneeberg has a double peak.
Its location in the Lower Austrian-Styrian Limestone Alps makes it the local mountain for the Viennese.
It is also said to provide the whole city with the best drinking water in the world.
This is due to its richly structured karst plateau, which has been running through Vienna`s first mountain spring line since 1873.
When the weather is nice and visibility is clearer, the Schneeberg and its snowfields can be seen clearly from Vienna.
The Breite Ries in particular, but also the north flanks of the Schneeberg, always attract courageous ski tourists.
In addition, there is an old Schneebergbahn (100 years old) and a rack railway on this mountain, which make it possible to reach the summit in two hours from the mountain station.
