Only five mountains in the Alps have a higher gap height:

  • Mont-Blanc
  • Grossglockner
  • Finsteraarhorn
  • Wildspitze
  • Piz Bernina

Both the mountain range and its highest mountain are referred to as the Hochkönig.
The mountain massif of the Hochkönig is connected to the north-west by the Torscharte with the Steinernes Meer.
In the north it is divided by the Hagengebirge through the Blühnbachtal, which has been
is well guarded as a hunting ground.
The mountain chain consists of a slightly north, about 12 km inclined wide plateau.
However, this breaks off to the south with up to 1000 m high rock faces and towers (Mandl Walls).
The named "Übergossene Alm" is located on the summit floor, which reaches down to approx. 2700 m.
At that time, in 1878, this gapless plateau glacier still had an area of ??5.5 km². Meanwhile
diesa but melted to almost 1.5 km². The edge of the plateau is marked by an almost circular
Mountain group formed:
  • Tightrope
  • lamb head
  • Hochkönig
  • Large and Small Viola Head
  • rick heads
  • Flosskogel
  • Tenneck
On the eastern edge is not only the ridge from the Kleiner Bratschenkopf to the Mandlwand from the
plateau, but also the solitary, impressive gate column.
The Matrashaus is right at the summit of the Hochkönig. This is a hut of a
Austrian tourist clubs with an overwhelming view of the further mountains
of the northern Berchtesgaden Alps, with the Dachstein Group to the east and the
Central Penkamm with the Glockner group. The mountain peak represents a trigonometric point of
first order, which makes it a popular launch site for hang-gliders and paragliders.

Tourism

For mountaineers there are additional starting points such as the Erichhütte, the Bertgenhütte, the large
Arthur house. the Ostpreußenhütte and the Mitterfeldalm.
A long but easy ascent is the path from the Arthurhaus through the Ochsenkar to the Mitterfeldalm
In contrast, the path from the Birgkarhaus through the Birgkar to the Matras House is more strenuous,
but also shorter and more interesting, which is well marked. The route, which crosses the Floßkogen
to Werfen (or Tenneck) is the longest descent for ski tours in the Eastern Alps in winter.
The towns of Dienten, Mühlbach and Maria Alm are in the valley, as well as in the main valley of the Salzach Bischofshofen,
Ort, Burg Werfen and Tenneck have their headquarters. As early as the Neolithic Age (approx. 3000 BC to 1977)
Copper mining was carried out at the foot of the Hochkönig in the Mühlbach area. At the foot of the Blühnbach valley near
Tenneck was mined for iron ore until 1960.
