General:
The Illimani is the highest mountain of the Cordilla Real and is located in the Amdem in Bolivia. With its height of 6439 m it is also the third highest in Bolivia.
The Nevado Illimani has a total of 5 peaks and is a paradise for hikers and mountaineers. As the southern foothills of the Royal Cordillera, the local mountain of La Paz makes the ascent an interesting experience with its scenic beauty. In 1898 Nevado Illimani was climbed by the British Martin Conway for the first time. However, an ascent via the west side did not take place until 1939.
In 1972, Ernesto Sanchez and Alain Mesili crossed the Illimani massif in six days.
The South Summit is quite easy to reach on the normal route in good weather conditions, but it can become quite dangerous when bad weather with strong winds and low temperatures approaches.
According to an Indian story, another mountain they called Mururata tried to surpass Nevado Illimani in size.
However, Illimani then became very angry and cut off the snow-covered head of the other mountain.
The rolling head is said to have returned 200km to the west and is still among us in the form of an inactive volcano called Sajama.
