Volcanoes Central America
Central America includes the land bridge between North and South America and the West Indies. It extends north geologically and geographically to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico. Central America is rich in volcanoes, many of which are still active. The view from the Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica is unforgettable. In Guatemala, majestic volcanoes rise up around Lake Atitlán and provide an incomparable panorama. With a height of 5,452 m, the Popocatépetl is one of the highest volcanoes in the world. It is about 65 km southeast of the center of the Mexican capital, Mexico City. The last major eruption of the volcano took place around 1,200 years ago.
