history
In 1102 the Counts of Sulzbach founded the Augustinian monastery. However, one was afraid of attacks and monsters that should live in the impenetrable forest. For this reason, Probst Eberwin used another monastery as his residence until 1111. However, when the first clearing began, this talc basin became more and more attractive for the prince provosts.
In 1156, Emperor Friedrich I granted the monastery forest sovereignty and soon afterwards also freedom to mine salt and metal.
Due to the economic boom, Berchtesgaden became prosperous and soon gained imperial freedom.
The independence of the monastery was further expanded in 1294 through the transfer of blood jurisdiction for serious crimes.
However, it can be traced that from 1102 until secularization in 1803, the archbishopric of Salzburg exerted a great deal of influence on Berchtesgaden.
It was not until 1803 that Berchtesgaden came under Bavarian ownership. However, the citizenship of the community changed for 7 years afterwards.
From 1802 it belonged to the Electorate of Salzburg for three years, then from 1805 to Austria and 1809 to France, until it finally came back into the possession of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1810.
When the aristocrats and royal residents of Bavaria gradually discovered the court hunts in Berchtesgaden, more and more intellectuals, students and wealthy industrialists visited Berchtesgaden and settled there.
As a result, nothing stood in the way of the economic boom and the construction of roads and railways began. Thus, Berchtesgaden also opened up to tourism.
