Manx cat

The Manx cat differs from all other cats in one very important point: it does not have a tail. However, this peculiarity is not due to the breeders. The Manx cat has existed on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea for centuries.

The taillessness of the Manx cat is due to a hereditary defect, which was probably caused by gene mutation as a result of extreme inbreeding in a relatively closed region. In addition to taillessness, there are also skeletal malformations and sometimes even other malformations.

Not only the absence of a tail and the physique lead to the hopping gait characteristic of the Manx cat, as known from rabbits, but also to health problems. The Manx cats also do not have as great a sense of balance as their conspecifics due to the lack of a tail, which is why they are also poor climbers.

According to the breed standard, a Manx cat`s rump should be higher than its shoulders. In addition, it should be completely without a tail and there should be no bones, cartilage, or similar where the tail would actually be. The coat should feel like a soft cushion, with the undercoat shorter than the topcoat.

The exhibition and breeding of this cat breed is prohibited in Germany for animal welfare reasons. Many animals of this species are crippled, partially paralyzed and in severe pain.
