Cats belong to the genus of carnivores, they belong to one of the oldest domesticated species. The domestic cat has been kept as a pet by humans for around 3,500 years. Cats are mammals. A distinction is made between domestic cats and pedigree cats. Purebred cats may only be titled as such if they comply with specified breed standards.
