Sil-Nylon

Sil-Nylon

This type of fabric consists mainly of nylon fibers. A thin layer of silicone is applied to the nylon fiber, which makes the fabric water-repellent and increases tear resistance. With a low weight of only about. 45g/sqm, Sil-Nylon is a top material for particularly light equipment.

In comparison, a cheap polyester lining from the fabric store weighs between 75g/sqm and 90g/sqm, with sil-nylon being much more stable. The silicone coating also increases the tear resistance in contrast to fabrics that are PU-coated. Sil-Nylon is absolutely tear-resistant although the material only weighs about 55g/sqm. Compared to 45g/sqm, Sil-Nylon is not as tear-resistant as the heavier material, but it has a better coating and is therefore much more waterproof.

The silicone applied to the nylon fiber is not solely responsible for the tear resistance, nor are the particularly thin fibers. The individual fibers, which are thicker, form a checkered structure, also known as a rip-stop structure.

When a tear begins, there is greater resistance and strength for tear propagation is increased, which is around 10-15kg.

Sil-Nylon is primarily used for tents, ponchos, bivy bags, canvas tents, water-resistant dunnage bags, lightweight gaiters, and many other almost limitless uses.
