Extension

Each file has a file extension, also known as a suffix. It is separated by a point after the file name and indicates which file format it has or which program it was created with.
Some of these extensions vary between the individual operating systems.
Some known extensions:

txt	text file
doc	Microsoft Word
xls	Microsoft Excel
ppt	Microsoft Powerpoint
