Phobia

phobias

A phobia (Greek phobos) is an excessive, obsessive fear of certain objects or situations. This fear causes the sufferer to spend much of their time avoiding the situation. The phobia gets stronger over time and can affect the entire daily routine.

Many people suffer from phobias. Well over 600 different phobias are currently known. A person can suffer from one or more phobias at the same time.

The distinction between "normal fears" and a pathological phobia (phobic disorder) is not always clear.

However, there are some criteria that speak for a pathological phobia. These include the following behavior patterns:

When the fear is clearly not appropriate to the situation.
If the corresponding fear reactions last significantly longer than necessary.
When the fear of the person concerned cannot be explained, influenced or managed.
If the fear causes significant impairments in the person's daily life.
