Thuringian Forest

Thuringian Forest

The Thuringian Forest is an approximately 130 km long and up to 35 km wide low mountain range, which rises to a height of 982 m (Großer Beerberg). Strictly speaking, there are 2 mountains here, which merge into one another unnoticed by the viewer of the landscape - in the west the Thuringian Forest and in the east the Thuringian Slate Mountains.

Relatively large differences in altitude are close together here. From the 978 m high Schneekopf, the terrain drops 600 m to the bottom of the Schneetessel at a distance of less than 2 km. The contrast between wooded mountains and deep valleys with steep slopes is what makes this low mountain range so attractive. The climate on the ridge is harsh and rainy.
