Harz
The northernmost low mountain range and the highest mountain range in northern Germany is the Harz. It is located in the federal states of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
It extends over a length of 110 km and a width of 30-40 km over an area of ??approx. 2,226 km².
Its highest elevation, the 1,141 m high Brocken, has been well known as a "witches` meeting point" since the late Middle Ages. The Brocken was also mentioned in Goethe`s "Faust".
In 2006, the first transnational national park was created from the existing Harz (Lower Saxony) and Hochharz (Saxony-Anhalt) national parks.
