Fichtelgebirge
The Fichtelgebirge is located in the north-east of Bavaria and in parts of the north-west of the Czech Republic. Several mountain ranges arranged in a horseshoe shape form the so-called Fichtelgebirge horseshoe.
The 1,053 m high Schneeberg is the highest peak in the low mountain range. This is followed by the Ochsenkopf at 1024 m as the second highest elevation.
Four important rivers have their source in the Fichtelgebirge:
- the Saale to the north
- the Eger to the east
- two source rivers of the Naab (Fichtelnaab and Haidenaab) to the south
- the White Main to the west
The main European watershed between the North Sea and the Black Sea runs across this ridge.
