Dolomites

The Dolomites (Italian Dolomiti) are a mountain group of the Southern Limestone Alps in
South-Tirol. These have broken up into bizarre towers and battlements or form tall
limestone and dolomite sticks. In between, green pastures with forests and lakes dominate,
what makes the Dolomites one of the most beautiful and popular mountaineering, tourist and
Ski area of ??the Alps makes. They spread out on an area east of the Adige
about 150 km long and 80 km wide and are distributed about equally over the
Italian regions of Trento-Alto Adige and Veneto to the provinces of South Tyrol,
Belluno and Trentino. The highest mountain in the Dolomites is the Marmolada at 3,342 m

Tourism The main route for tourism is the Dolomiten-Straße, which runs from Bozen over the Karerpass

and the Pordoi pass leads to Cortina. The Alpe di Siusi is surrounded by rocky meadows
known as the largest high plateau in Europe. The Dolomites also offer a variety of
Holiday options such as alpine tours in the summit zones, or hikes, mountain biking,
Whitewater rafting and kayaking, motorbike tours, paragliding and skiing.

Geomorphology The abrupt change between the gently undulating pastures and the steep limestone reefs

characterizes the region of the Dolomites. The mountain range consists largely of sedimentary rock, with
has characteristic layers. In the strata there are also layers of petrified
Coral reefs known as dolomite. In addition, volcanic traces
prove, and one finds e.g. in Latemar deep incisions in the main ridge, at the bottom
dark lava rock can be seen. Thus, the mountains show strong weathering and
are flatter because the cooled lava is much softer than the surrounding limestone.
The lava as bedrock is also partly responsible for the wild fissures of some massifs
responsible.
