Carnic Alps

The Carnic Alps form a more than 100 km long, pronounced ridge that runs from east to west. These are a very popular hiking area that stretches from the Drava, Gail and Tagliamento.

In the west, the ridge begins with the striking Helm (2,433 m) in the Sexten ski area and reaches the 2,700 meter limit several times with the Pfannspitze (2,678 m), the large Kinigat (2,689 m) and the Hochweißstein (Monte Peralba, 2,694 m). . The highest peak is the Hohe Warte at 2,780 m above sea level. A. The lower eastern part of the mountain range is traversed by the two major passes: Plöckenpass and Nassfeldpass.

At the time of the First World War, the front of the mountains towards Italy ran along the Carnic Alps. The traces left by this war in the mountains are still omnipresent today. There is also a multi-award-winning museum in the Plöcken Pass area in Kötschach-Mauthen with open-air facilities that vividly illustrate the events.

The Wolayersee is geologically unique in the world. It has enormous 1300 m thick coral reefs in the Hohe-Warte and Kellerwand region with the smallest spatial distance to deep-sea limestone. These Paleozoic calcareous massifs are formed in areas near the equator, located in the warm and shallow seas of the Devon coast of Africa. At more than 400 million years, they are many times older than the Mesozoic Alps.

The Carnic Alps are among the approximately 100 most important geological regions on earth. Nowhere else in Europe have the development areas of the deep sea, the Palaeozoic, the continental margins and the reef lagoons been brought together so closely that they can be experienced at a glance. Despite the multiple mountain folding, the preservation of the fossils is remarkable. Geologists regularly come from all over the world to see this phenomenon on site.
