Japanese Bobtail Longhair

Japanese Bobtail Longhair

Analogously to the translation, the Japanese Bobtail (or Boby) is a cat with a clip tail. Also known as the Japanese stub-tailed cat in German-speaking countries, its main feature, as the name explains, is its distinctive, short tail.

Another name is chrysanthemum cat. This name explains the hair on the tail. The longer and thicker hair on the tail makes it look like a tassel or a chrysanthemum blossom.

Origin

The Japanese Bobtail has been known in its native Japan for centuries. This cat, which is considered a lucky charm, especially in the colors white, red and black, can already be found in very old Japanese pictures and drawings. Japanese superstition holds that only cats with short or no tails are good, while long tails bring bad luck. Nevertheless, the Japanese Bobtail has more of the status of an "ordinary house cat" in its homeland.

Appearance

The Japanese Bobtail is a breed that belongs to the slim types. The body of this cat is long, narrow and elegant, but at the same time muscular and strong without appearing heavy. Her legs are also slender and long, but they don't look delicate or fragile. Their paws are medium sized and oval with the forequarters being noticeably shorter than the hindquarters.

The Japanese Bobtail's head shape is an isosceles triangle with soft curves and high cheekbones. The nose is relatively long but well contoured and has a slight indentation at or slightly below eye level. Their mouth is relatively broad and round, with a slight break on the cord hair pad.

Their eyes, matching the color of their fur, are large and oval and set slightly slanted, their ears are large and set wide apart. They stand erect, never facing outwards.

Their soft and silky fur is of medium length.

The distinctive feature of the Japanese Bobtail is its tail. Due to the longer, often fan-shaped hair, it looks like a tassel, but can vary greatly from cat to cat. What is decisive, however, is that it is clearly visible and is bent, angled or kinked one or more times. It may consist of one or more limbs, with strong, rigid bones joined together practically immovably except at the base.

With the exception of Abyssinian agouti and Siamese markings, all color variants and coat markings are permitted.

However, the three-colored checkered version of white, black and red, which the Japanese call "Mi-Ke", is particularly popular. Mi-Ke means three skins. What is special here is that the Mi-Ke only has female young.

Character

The Japanese Bobtail is very curious, playful and intelligent. The nature of the cat is friendly and even if it only has a relatively soft voice, it likes to use it often. She is uncomplicated, very adaptable and adapts quickly to a new environment.

Breed Standards and Breeding

The decisive criterion is the tail. Its shape and direction are not specified, but it should be 5-8cm long. When stretched out, it must not be longer than 13 cm. It must appear like a tassel and must not protrude too straight or too far from the body.

It is also considered a fault if the cat's head is round and short and the body looks stocky.

Features

The short tail is not a deformity.
It does not require any extraordinary care. She is only bathed shortly before exhibitions, otherwise the coat is groomed with a fine comb or buckskin.
