Bohemian Rex

According to photo documents, the Rex cat itself has existed since 1930 and was probably the so-called German Rex. This was found in 1947 for the first time in a kennel in Berlin. The Bohemian Rex is a relatively new breed in the Rex cat scene and takes its name from the region where it was first spotted, in this case Bohemia.

According to the records, the first Bohemian Rex cat was born in the Czech town of Liberec in 1981. The peculiarity of the Rex cats in general was their curly and more than half-long fur, which was rather untypical for the actual litters of Persian cats. After a few years, however, the explanation was found that it was a defective gene in the Rex cats. In the following, it was possible to use the responsible gene for targeted mating and the semi-long-haired Rex cats became more and more popular.

Appearance

The appearance of the Bohemian Rex cat is still very similar to that of a Persian cat, but with quite curly and medium to long fur. Also very characteristic are the broad and rounded head and the very full cheeks. The breed standard of the Bohemian Rex cat results from these and other external characteristics.

The fur is of medium length, in some cases even long and very dense and wavy to curly. Characteristic of the fur are also the pronounced collar and the panties on the hind legs.

The Bohemian Rex cat's head is round with a very strong jaw and chin. The full cheeks and the short and very broad nose are also typical. The ears are small and set wide apart, the ears have rounded tips and are found relatively low on the cat's head. In contrast to the small ears, the eyes should be very large, open and round.

In addition, it is desired that the eyes are relatively far apart. The body of the Bohemian Rex cat is typically very muscular, the shoulders and chest are very broad, so that the body as a whole can even appear quite stocky. The tail is short and bushy, proportioned to the body as a whole.
The short and strong legs, which are complemented by round paws with tufts of hair, also match the overall build.

Character

So far, there is little concrete knowledge about the character of the Bohemian Rex cat, but due to the species affinity to the Persian cat, the characteristics of the Bohemian Rex can also be assigned as quite appropriate. Therefore, she can be described as very quiet, reserved and domesticated. She is not a typical outdoor cat and is therefore the ideal indoor cat. Of course, like all cats, bohemians love to be petted, but in moderation. If the cat wants to be left alone, it will indicate this quite clearly.

Breed Standards and Breeding

The body of the American Wirehair should appear rounded with equal width at the hips and shoulders. Each hair of the coat should be curved and curled and snapped at the ends. There should be whorls so that the fur is sticking up from the body. Great importance is attached to the general vertebral impression. The profile should be clearly curved with a modified stop. As for the eyes, attention is paid to the harmony with the color of the fur. Silver cats can only have green eyes, while brown tabby cats can only have gold eyes. The colors chocolate, lilac and colourpoint are not recognized.

colors

There are no overly fixed color specifications here. The colors are mostly beige or light brown and due to the relatively long and dense fur, no typical and distinctive patterns can be seen, but there are different shades.

Diseases

Apart from the normal cat diseases, no special diseases are known.

Features

A special feature of the Bohemian Rex is certainly that due to the long coat, you have to take care of the cat's coat very intensively with brushes etc., since the coat also tends to become matted quickly.
