Club history:
As the name suggests, the roots of Hannover 96 go back to 1896. In that year, former middle school students founded the "Hanoverian Football Club of 1896". However, at that time, rugby was played with an oval ball under the term football. It was not until 1899, when English football was slowly catching on in Germany, that the “rugby club” became a football club.
In 1913, the "Hanoverian Football Club from 1896" and the "Ballverein Hannovera from 1898" merged to form the "Hannoverscher Sportverein von 1896 e.V.". In addition to football and athletics, tennis, cricket, volleyball, fistball and hiking were also offered.
Although the club's official colors were black, white and green, the players continued to wear red jerseys, earning them the nickname "Die Roten". The club achieved its first sporting success in 1938 when it won the German championship title.
In the first Bundesliga season in 1963/64, Hannover 96 qualified right away through sporting success for promotion to the Bundesliga and played there for the next ten years. In 1974, they were relegated until they were promoted again after ten years.
From 1989 to 1996 Hannover 96 belonged to the 2nd Bundesliga and in 1992 the club was the first second division team to win the DFB Cup. After 13 years of abstinence from the highest German football league, promotion was achieved again in 2002. In the last few seasons, Hannover 96 has been able to hold its own in the middle of the table.
