Archery is a very old sport that evolved from archery used in war and hunting. Competitions according to sporting rules were held more than 2000 years ago. What is probably the oldest arch in the world was recently discovered in Mannheim; its age is given as 17,600 years.

Archery is the sport of shooting with a bow and arrow at a target and can be carried out outdoors or indoors. The round disc supports are z. B. attached to rush, Stramit or foam boards so that the center is 130 cm above the ground. The targets have different diameters depending on the distance and age groups of the shooters. 10 rings are printed on the disc, whereby 2 rings are combined into color zones from the center.

The archers' equipment consists of a sports bow, arrows, quivers, finger and arm guards, and arrows are used as ammunition. The shooter tries to shoot the arrows into the target with the bow. Recurve shooting has become an increasingly popular sport in recent years, especially in many Far Eastern countries. Unlike bare archery, stabilizers, aiming aids, and draw markers are allowed. The shooting process is regulated by a traffic light, whereby a distinction is made between single and double row shooting. The length of the shooting time depends on the competition and is defined in the relevant regulations.

The most important worldwide organization of archers is FITA, the Fédération Internationale de Tir à l'Arc. Archery in Germany is organized into two associations, the German Shooting Association and the German Archery Association. The German Shooting Federation has grown historically in Germany and provides the respective German champions as well as World Cup and Olympic participants. Archery has been an Olympic discipline since 1972 (after it was at the start of the modern Olympic Games from 1900 to 1920), although this only applies to the recurve bow.
