ski jumping

The cradle of ski jumping lies in Norway, where from 1879 an annual ski jumping competition took place on the Husebybakken in Oslo. In 1892 the competition moved to the Holmenkollen, today the oldest ski jumping hill in the world, near Oslo. To this day it is considered the Mecca of Nordic winter sports. Men's ski jumping has been an Olympic discipline since the first Winter Games in 1924.

Ski jumping is a winter sport in which the jumpers ski down the inrun of a ski jump, jump off a ramp, called a take-off table, and try to fly as far as possible. In addition to the flight distance, grades are awarded for flight posture and load.

The jumping technique is divided into run-up, take-off from the take-off table, flight and landing (jumping up). In flight, the body should lie as still as possible in the air with a wide forward lean and a steady posture of the arms at the sides of the body. When jumping, the skis are flared out to the front (V-style). Usually two jumps are completed, with only the best jump being counted.

Ski jumping is available as an individual sport and as a team event. In team jumping, the team consists of four participants. The overall result is obtained by adding the total marks of the four jumpers.

Ski jumping on particularly large hills (from a construction point of 185 m, so-called flying hills) is called ski flying.

Ski jumping is also part of Nordic combined along with skiing.
