US-American national anthem

US-American national anthem

Country: USA (United States of America)
Title: The Star-Spangled Banner
Text: Francis Scott Key (1814)
Composer: John Stafford Smith (circa 1800)
National anthem since: 1931

Original text:

1. Oh say can you see
By the dawn\'s early light
What so proud we hailed
At the twilight\'s last gleaming
Whose broad stripes and bright stars
Through the perilous fight
O\'er the ramparts we watched
Were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets red glare
The bombs bursting in air
Give proof through the night
That our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled
banner yet wave
O\'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave?

2. On the shore dimly seen
Thru the mist of the deep
Where the foe\'s haughty host
In dread silence reposes
What is that which the breeze
O\'er the towering steeple
As it blows fitfully
Half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam
Of the morning\'s first beam
In full glory reflected
Now shines in the stream.
This the star-spangled banner
O long may it wave
O\'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave!

4. Oh! thus be it ever
When freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes
And the war\'s desolation!
Blest with vict\'ry and peace
May the Heav\'n-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made
And preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must
When our cause is just
And this is our motto:
\"In God is our trust.\"
And the star-spangled banner
In triumph shall wave
O\'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave!

Translation:

1. Oh say can you see
in the light of early dawn
What we so proudly celebrated
at dusk\'s last glimmer
Whose wide stripes and bright stars
through the dangerous battles
Over the ramparts we watched
so stately?
And the rockets red glow
the bursting of bombs in the air
announced throughout the night
that our flag was still there.
Oh say, does this star-studded banner still wave
Over the land of the free and home of the brave?

2. Just seen on the shore
through the mists of the deep
Where the enemy\'s proud seat
rests in reverential silence
What is it that the breeze
over the towering steep slope,
When she blows twitching
half hidden, half revealed?
Now it captures the shimmer
of the first morning ray
Reflected in all its glory
it now shines in the (light) stream.
It\'s the Stars and Stripes! O long may it blow
Above the land of the free and home of the brave.

4. Oh so be it forever
where free men stand
Between their beloved homes
and the devastation of war!
Blessed with Victory and Peace
may the land saved from heaven
praise the power
who made and kept us a nation.
Then we must conquer
for our cause is just
and this is our motto:
\"We trust in God.\"
And may the star-studded banner wave forever
over the land of the free and home of the brave!
