Rocks proved that volcanoes used to be part of the landscape, but not in the last 200 million years.
About 750 million years ago, the volcanoes erupted and poured out along the median line that later became the Appalachian Mountains.
A remnant of this volcanic zone, with its volcanic rock, can still be seen on Mount Rogers today.
