General:
Mount Mitchell is located in North Carolina, USA.
It has a height of 2037 meters, making it the highest mountain in the Appalachian Mountains.
This mountain is the easternmost point in North America and is traversed by the Appalachian Trail.
Mount Mitchell and the associated park were named after a professor at the University of North Carolina, Elisha Mitchell, when he determined the height of the mountain in 1835.
The summit of Mount Mitchell is reached after a short hike through a forest. A road also makes the ascent easier.
Up there you can admire the landscape from a viewing platform or pay a visit to Elisha Mitchell`s gravesite.
Pollution is a big problem on the mountain. The flora suffers from acidic precipitation with low pH.
These acids primarily attack trees, such as fir and spruce, by releasing natural metals.
Important minerals are reduced due to the acidic precipitation and thus the resistance of the trees to insects, among other things.
