Mount Katahdin is the highest mountain in Maine at 1,606 m (USA), which is located in a large nature reserve. Its highest peak is
the Baxter Peak.
history
In 1764, Joseph Chadwick reported the first discovery of Mount Katahdin
by a non-native. 1804 saw the first ascent of the summit by
a group of twelve mountain hikers led by Charles Turner jr. instead of.
A fixed base camp has been provided for the ascents since 1877.

Location and Surroundings
The massif is located near the eastern limit of the Piscataquis
Country`s. At its exit flow the watery west arm and the smaller
east branch of the Penobscot River together. Those arriving should park at the
"Chimney pond campground" parking since Mount Kathadin is not accessible by car
