General:
At 1268 m, Mont Jaques-Cartier is the highest point in Canada Gaspé Peninsula (French: Gaspésie, colloquially Gaspé). This is from
northern foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and juts out into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.
The French-speaking area belongs to the province of Québec.
The country falls north mostly as a rugged rocky coast to the St. Lawrence River
away. In contrast, the section to the south is flatter and
more agricultural. Because of the barren environment, tourism is a
important source of income for the residents living there.
Parc national de la Gaspesie
Mont Jaques-Cartier is covered with snow until June.
The mountain is located in the large Parc de la Gaspésie in the south of Sainte-Anne-des
Monts. Since the climate is very harsh and uneconomical, few people find
here a livelihood. Further north are many caribou and one
can also spot white deer and elk.
