Palatinate forest
The Palatinate Forest is located in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate and has an area of ??1,771 km² and is Europe`s largest contiguous forest area.
Reddish sandstone and rugged rock formations created by erosion dominate the appearance of the Palatinate Forest.
The highest elevation in the Palatinate Forest is the Kalmit at 673 m. The second highest mountain is the Kesselberg at 663 m.
In 1958 the Palatinate Forest Nature Park was created. Since 1998 it has been part of the first transboundary UNESCO biosphere reserve, the Palatinate Forest-Vosges du Nord biosphere reserve.
