Bavarian Forest
The central mountain range of the Bavarian Forest is located in the east of Bavaria.
It extends from Lower Bavaria via the Upper Palatinate to the Czech border. There the low mountain range bears the name Bohemian Forest.
The highest peak in the Bavarian Forest is the Großer Arber at 1,456 m.
Right after that is the Great Rachel at 1,453 m.
In 1970, the eastern part of the Bavarian Forest was declared the first national park in Germany and was given the name Bavarian Forest National Park. In 1997 an extension was made. Since then, the Bavarian Forest National Park and the Šumava National Park in the Czech Republic have formed one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Europe.
Geography
From a geological and cultural-geographical point of view, the relatively densely wooded mountains continue as far as Bohemia and Upper Austria. It can be determined, for example, with the part of Germany that lies south of the line Regensburg - Cham - Bayerisch Eisenstein and north-east of the Danube.

In the outskirts of the Bavarian Forest, the average amount of precipitation is 1,300 - 1,400 mm per year due to rain on the slopes and increased risk of thunderstorms. In the Upper Bavarian Forest even 1,500-1,600 mm are reached.
Humidity is exceptionally low throughout the region. Not infrequently, only 35% relative humidity is measured. The average temperatures are in the lower range. Especially at higher altitudes, the temperatures can become uncomfortable in late spring, autumn and summer. Even night frost cannot be ruled out.
Tourism
Tourism is of great importance. In addition to nature, hiking and forest culture, the Bavarian Forest also offers several ski areas. The region is known for its glass blowing art, which is centered in and around Zwiesel.
