Location and surroundings:
The Grossglockner is considered the highest mountain in Austria. As the main summit, the Glockner Group, it is in the Hohe Tauern and has a total height of 3798 m It lies on the border between East Tyrol and Carinthia and at its foot is the largest glacier in the Eastern Alps, the Pasterze. For this reason, its flanks are also heavily glaciated. The 47.8 km long Grossglockner High Alpine Road runs between Bruck and Heiligenblut. This leads from the Fuscher valley to the Fuscher Törl, then over the Hochtor pass and finally into the Mölltal. It is possible to reach either the Franz-Josephs-Höhe or the Edelweißspitze via junctions.

Texture: The summit of the Großglockner group is actually characteristic and pyramid-shaped.
However, it actually consists of two elevations, the Kleinglockner and the Großglockner. However, these two are in turn due to the highest Austria`s gap, the "Obere Glocknerscharte". The term notch means a ridge incision. On the other hand, the course of the watershed between two mountains is referred to as a crest or ridge. The height of the notch is one of the most important characteristics of the independence of a mountain.

First ascent: The first attempt in 1799 to climb the Großglockner failed.
A year later, however, another expedition was put together. The patron Franz-Xaver Salm-Reifferscheid, Prince Bishop of Gurk, organized 62 people, including 47 mountain guides. The expedition built a shelter, the old Salmhütte, at an altitude of 2750 m especially for this project.
In the same year, the two brothers and carpenters Sepp and Martin Klotz as well as the Döllach pastor Horasch also risked climbing up the hill Hohenwartscharte to the summit. However, there is also a direct ascent to the Glocknerscharte, the Pallavicini gully. In 1876, Alfred the Margrave of Pallavicini, with three guides, undertook the first ascent. For a long time he was the only one until 25 years later it was climbed again.

General: The Großglockner is also known as the "King of the Hohe Tauern".
The Grossglockner was privately owned until 1918. Today the Austrian Alpine Club owns the mountain.
