The Age of Discovery and Church Split (1450 - 1900 AD) As a result of the rediscovery and study of antiquity, new sciences formed with classical philology and archeology. In art, the fundamental break with the tradition of the Middle Ages took place around 1420 in Florence. Here, linear perspective was developed and three-dimensional space was convincingly reproduced on a flat surface. The sculptor Donatello had a lasting influence on Renaissance art. He created the bronze David - the first life-size nude statue since antiquity. The motifs from ancient mythology appeared alongside the Christian motifs.
