Duden - From tradition to the future

The name Duden vouches for the highest lexicographical and language-technological competence and stands for standard reference works and application software for the contemporary German language. The products of Dudenverlag show the broad spectrum of the German language and provide security in all linguistic matters. The \"Spelling Duden\" is still the main work in the extensive Duden program and has served as a guide and orientation aid for 127 years.

The reference work is now regarded as the highest spelling authority. 20 scientific employees work in the Duden editorial office in Mannheim. These observe and document the vocabulary and language change of German with the help of the most modern database technology. An important basis for dictionary work today is the large and constantly growing electronic text collection, which was created and maintained by the publisher itself. This \"Duden corpus\" now has more than 1 billion words or word forms and ensures an authentic documentation of the changing German language today. A wide variety of text types from the entire German-speaking area are processed and evaluated. Accurate linguistic information on each of the millions of word forms plays an important role, along with the balance and variety of textual sources. The results of quantitative and qualitative analysis methods are directly reflected in the quality of the Duden reference works.

The \"Learning to learn\" series from Duden gives students the right instructions. This gives parents the security of supporting their children in a targeted manner. Younger students can go on a voyage of discovery with the sophisticatedly designed volumes and thus get to know their own strengths and abilities. Older students and parents are given guidelines that enable them to deal with the questions at hand in a motivated and relaxed manner. Examples to try out and exercises for self-awareness encourage participation and thinking, and learning methods and strategies can be acquired in a natural and playful way. The learning units are networked with each other, which means that thematic entry is possible at any point in a volume.

The 24th edition of the standard work \"Duden - The German spelling\" corresponds to the current status of the official spelling regulations. According to the decision of the responsible state authorities, this Duden has been the binding basis for writing practice in schools since August 2006. The Duden 2006 lists all permissible variants in all cases in which the new orthography allows for several spellings for a word. One of them is recommended, which is clearly highlighted with a yellow background. The recommendations are intended as a decision-making aid for the media, companies, publishers and private individuals, among others, for whom uniform spelling is important.

The spelling dictionary is available on all established technical platforms: as CD-ROM for Windows, Mac and Linux as well as software for handhelds and smartphones. All digital implementations offer acoustic pronunciation aids for over 9000 difficult words based on the soundtracks from the ARD pronunciation database. Network licenses are also available from Duden on request.

The Duden editorial team is in close contact with the language community via the telephone Duden language advice service, to which around 40,000 inquiries are directed each year. The language advisors at this oldest and probably most frequented service facility are available to answer questions about a wide variety of problems relating to the German language. Since the summer of 2004, Duden language advice has also been available in Austria and Switzerland. Since June 2000, it has also published a fortnightly, free \"Newsletter\", which contains an interesting mixture of information, tips and things worth knowing about the German language. More than 130,000 interested parties have already subscribed to this \"newsletter\", and the trend is increasing.
