American Curl Shorthair

The American Curl breed first appeared in Lakewood California in 1981. There, in June 81, two young cats were found in a sling by John and Grace Ruga. One of the two cats stayed with you. It was a female cat with long black fur, they named the cat Shulamith, which means black but pretty. Den Rugas soon noticed that the cat had oddly shaped ears, but that didn`t bother her. On December 12 of the same year, Shulamith gave birth to four little kittens, two of whom had the same deformed ears as their mother. When the Rugas noticed this, it was of course obvious that this was an opportunity to breed a new breed of cat. An acquaintance of the Rugas finally gave her the idea of ??showing the kittens with the deformed ears at a cat show in Palm Springs. The exhibition took place in October 1983, at which time the new breed of cats was presented to the public for the first time. The acceptance of the breed was very promising, after only 2 years in 1985 the breed was officially registered and recognized.

One of the main characteristics of the American Curl is the shape of the ears. The ears in this breed flare backwards, exposing the hair on the inside of the ears. The cause of this deformation is a spontaneous mutation that makes the ears feel stiff and immobile. American Curl baby kittens are initially born with straight ears, only after 24-72 hours do the ears begin to curl up tightly. Over the next 4 months, the ears will relax a little and take on the typical semi-curved shape. Originally, American Curl cats had long hair, later short-haired variants were added.

The American Curl is a lively and friendly cat. She also impresses with her high intelligence and docility. Always up for a joke, she is said to have acted like a little kitten throughout her life.
