US Open (Golf)

The US Open is the second oldest of the four major golf tournaments after the Open Championchip. They first took place on October 4, 1895 in Newport, Rhode Island. In the fourth round, Englishman Horace Rawlins won.

Every year in July, the US Open is held on different courses. Amateurs and professionals can compete through a series of qualifying tournaments. There are a number of players who are also automatically qualified, such as winners over the last ten years, winners of the other majors over the last five years, the top 30 on the USPGA Money List and ultimately the US Amateur Champion.

In the event of a tie after the fourth round, unlike the other majors, a full round (18 hole) play-off will be conducted the next day (Monday) to determine the US Open winner.

In addition to the US Open and the Open Championchip, the US Masters and the USPGA Championchips are other major golf tournaments. Most often the US Open won:

Willie Anderson (4 wins between 1901 and 1905)
Robert Tire Jones Jr (4 wins between 1923 and 1930)
• Ben Hogan (4 wins between 1948 and 1953)
Jack Nicklaus (4 wins between 1961 and 1980)
