Petromax

Petromax

In 1910 the Berlin councilor of commerce Max Graetz developed a new kind of kerosene lamp. Always called "Petroleum-Maxe" by his friends, he adopted this name as a modification for the new product. The Petromax lamp was a success model right from the start. To this day, it is produced in China under this name.

How the lantern works:
Depending on the design, these high-intensity lamps vaporize petrol or kerosene in a special carburetor. The fuel is pressurized in a tank using a built-in air pump, flows into the carburetor, is heated there so much that it vaporizes, and then mixed with air in a mixing tube, causing the glow body, also known as the mantle, to glow. This type of construction enables a significantly higher light output than the traditional wick lamps. However, operation and maintenance of such a high-power lamp are far more complicated and expensive. B. Petroleum high-power lamps are often preheated with denatured alcohol or built-in burners.
