History

About 2000 years ago, Christianity arose in the Roman province of Palestine and first spread to the cities of the Roman Empire, but also gained a foothold in the Persian Empire and reached as far as India. In the 4th century it was declared the state religion of the Roman Empire. In the 7th century and as Islam spread, the core lands were lost. The Christian Occident, the Christianity of the Middle Ages, developed from the patriarchate of Rome. Because of the worldwide colonization by Christian countries that followed the mission, Christianity became the world religion with the largest number of followers.

The basis for the teaching of Christianity is the Bible. This consists of the Old Testament, the Jewish Bible, to which a selection of writings from the early days of Christianity in the 1st century was added as the New Testament.
