Connection Types
The most common way to connect to the Internet is to use a modem. In the beginning there were only telephone modems, which were first used in 1966. In the beginning, modems established the connection using sound transducers over existing telephones. The transmission rates were very low, susceptible to interference and technically limited. In the course of time, the modems have been continuously developed and improved, thus enabling higher transmission rates. A further development made it possible to send and receive faxes. Other types of connections were added later, such as cable modems, xDSL modems, cable network modems, wireless modems and power line modems, each of which used a different transmission medium for data transfer.
