The Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, Bremen for short, is located in the North German Plain. It is the smallest federal state in Germany. The state includes the two cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven, which are 53 km apart.

Bremen was the starting point of the Christian mission to Northern Europe. Already in 787 it was a bishopric and in 845 it was even the seat of an archbishop. The dominion of the archbishops fell to Sweden in 1648 as the Duchy of Bremen with the capital Stade. While the duchy passed to the Kingdom of Hanover in 1715, the city of Bremen remained an independent imperial city.

From 1810 to 1813, during the Napoleonic period, Bremen became the capital of the Wesermündung department, which belonged to the French Empire.
