Mysterious TV interference and UFOs darkening the skies suggest an invasion from another world. An attempt to communicate peacefully with the newcomers fails. Physicist Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) accidentally decodes the beings` communication system and discovers a hidden countdown. He finds a terrifying answer that when time is up, earth and humanity will cease to exist. Much too late, the American President (Bill Pullman) orders the evacuation of all major cities, because the alien attack begins without warning. Arranging a counterstrike turns out to be a mistake, as the rockets are useless against the ships` hulls. The pilot Steven Hiller (Will Smith) has to experience this on his own body. Hope fades until the government comes out with the truth about the secret base Area 51. There, everyone tries to find a solution. Scientists and the military work hard, under the leadership of the President, on the next counterattack. The computer specialist and the perky marine pilot set off in a UFO on a mission to infect the mothership with a computer virus. According to calculations, this should paralyze the energy shields of the daughter ships on Earth. The American President, on the other hand, is organizing the largest air battle of all time on earth at the same time.
