With 1.2 million hectares of vineyards, Spain is the country with the largest vineyard area in the world, but because of the dry and drought periods "only" the world's third largest wine producer.
While the fashion varieties of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay have been cultivated for some time, they have not been able to compete against the native grape varieties, which include Airén, Macabro, Palomino, Parellada, Pedro Ximénez, Sardina, Bobal, Garnacha, and Monastrell.
Spanish wines are becoming more popular in Germany every year, and barrel-aged red wines in particular are very popular. It is said that Hannibal's troops stocked up on plenty of good wine from Spain on their way to Rome.
