Chile

Chile is the No. 1 wine country in South America. Due to its large north-south extension, viticulture in Chile is concentrated in four wine-growing regions and their sub-regions, which lie between the 30th and 38th degrees of latitude. Modern Chilean viticulture began in the mid-19th century when French winegrowers immigrated and brought their varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, with them. The old Bordeaux grape variety Carménère is considered a typical Chilean wine variety. In no other region of the world is this grape variety cultivated more professionally and extensively than in Chile.

Today Chile produces modern, pleasing wines for the international market. The trend grape varieties Cabernet-Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay form the basis of production.
