Dennis Quaid plays Knight Bowen, an old-school knight who still believes in and holds fast to the ideals of the Arthurian round. He has made it his mission to teach these ideals to his protégé, Prince Einon, but he turns out to be a poor student. As a youth, Prince Einon is badly injured in a fight, only half a dragon`s heart could save him. But the dragon sets conditions for half his heart, Einon must become a kinder ruler than his reigning father. Einon does not keep the oath, on the contrary he develops into a cruel tyrant. Drenched in hate, Bowen leaves the royal court to roam the country as a dragon slayer, as he is firmly convinced that the dragon heart poisoned Einon. One day Bowen and the dragon meet and a friendship develops, but what Bowen doesn`t know at this point is that his dragon is the heart donor.
