Career
Chow Yun-Fat is one of the greats of Hong Kong cinema, like Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. He was able to establish himself outside of his homeland and make a name for himself.
He began his career as a nervous actor in an unknown TV series in China.
He was born and grew up in a small fishing village on the island of Lamma. At the age of ten he moved to the capital of Hong Kong and applied for his first casting at the age of 18. Chow Yun-Fat prevailed and made his grand debut on Broadcasts Limited television station.
He now made it with small roles and appearances in television shows and flickered over the cinema screen for the first time in 1976 as a likeable Chinese in the action-adventure "Xin Su xiao mei san nan xin lang".
His reputation grew more and more and he grew more and more into a superstar. In 1981 he finally had his breakthrough with the film "Woo yuet dik goo si" and only five years later he was considered the busiest actor in Asia.
He also became Asia`s record breaker with nine films in a leading role in 1986. Among them was the film "City Wolf" by John Woo, which made both internationally known.
Chow Yun-Fat scooped up award after award and became a top star without even having made a single film in Hollywood.
But even he couldn`t resist Hollywood`s call and followed the call in 1998. He made his US debut with the film The Replacement Killers.
From this point on he made significantly fewer films but reached a larger audience with them.
Well-known films were "Anna and the King" alongside Jodie Foster and "Corruptor" in 1999.
The highlight of his career came with his leading role in the film Tiger & Dragon, which was nominated for 10 Oscars and ultimately took home four.
His latest project is the role of the pirate captain Sao-Feng in the 3rd part of Pirates of the Caribbean.
This versatile actor manages to convince in his films and feels at home in almost all genres.
A Chinese postage stamp was even dedicated to him in 2005 in honor of his achievements.
