New Year (January 1st)
January 1st has been the 1st day of the new calendar year in Western culture since the Middle Ages. This date is associated with a New Year celebration. It is a legal and political holiday and is therefore nationwide.
Customs for New Year's DayIn Germany, fireworks and firecrackers are as much a part of New Year's Eve as are good wishes and good health in the new year. In many places, people wish each other a “Happy New Year”. However, this probably has nothing to do with "slip" but could go back to Hebrew "rosh" 'head, beginning'. Large cultural and symphony orchestras often put on a New Year's concert on New Year's Day.
