New Year (January 1st)

New Year (January 1st)

January 1st has been the 1st day of the new calendar year in Western culture since the Middle Ages. This date is associated with a New Year celebration. It is a legal and political holiday and is therefore nationwide.

Customs for New Year's Day

In Germany, fireworks and firecrackers are as much a part of New Year's Eve as are good wishes and good health in the new year. In many places, people wish each other a “Happy New Year”. However, this probably has nothing to do with "slip" but could go back to Hebrew "rosh" 'head, beginning'. Large cultural and symphony orchestras often put on a New Year's concert on New Year's Day.
