Northern Germany
After the Reformation in the 16th century, the carnival tradition died out in the predominantly Protestant north-west and north of Germany. However, some foolish strongholds have defied this development. For example, the town of Damme in the traditionally Roman Catholic Oldenburger Münsterland. In contrast to most other north German carnival strongholds such as Braunschweig, for example, it can look back on a very long carnival tradition.
