Wine-growing region Nahe

Geographical Location

The Nahe wine-growing region stretches along the Rhine tributary of the same name and is located in Rhineland-Palatinate. The Nahe is accompanied by vineyards on its course from the Hunsrück to its confluence with the Rhine near Bingen.

Grape Varieties

On the wine-growing areas of the Nahe region, 75% white wines and 25% red wines are grown. Among the white wines, the Riesling grape variety leads with 26%, followed by 13% Müller-Thurgau, 7% Silvaner, 5% each Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Kerner. The most important red wine varieties are Dornfelder with a share of 11% and Pinot Noir with a share of 6%.

Climate and Soils

In the lower Nahe, the soil consists mainly of quartzite and slate, in the middle Nahe of porphyry, melaphyre and red sandstone, as well as weathered soil, sandstone, loess and loam near Bad Kreuznach.

Most of the vineyards are in flat and hilly areas. Only a small part, mainly in the area around Bad Münster am Stein, are steep slopes. The Riesling in particular produces very mineral, elegant wines here.

Feature

Across Germany, the Nahe wine-growing region offers the greatest variety of soils and the most confined changes.

Size and Locations

The wine-growing region covers 4,136 hectares of vineyards. They are divided into 7 major sites: Burgweg, Paradiesgarten, Rosengarten, Kronenberg, Sonnenborn, Schlosskapelle and Pfarrgarten, as well as 328 individual sites.
