Expressionism
Expressionism is a revolutionary art movement that spread mainly in northern Europe from around 1900. The founding of the Dresden artist group "Brücke" is considered the beginning of Expressionism in Germany. The main representatives are the Brücke members and the members of the Munich artists` association "Der Blaue Reiter".
The basic mood of the pictures usually express insecurity, fear, doubt and hopelessness. Characteristics of Expressionist artworks are representational painting styles, distorted objects, black outlines, aggressive coloring and angular shapes. The works should represent a conscious demarcation against naturalism and impressionism. In Expressionism, the artist pursues the goal of using artistic means to depict subjective reactions to reality and emotions.
